GEOGRAPHY :
Formerly known as Bourbon Island, it was renamed Reunion in 1793 and is a French Overseas Department with a surface area of 2,512 km2 resulting from a large volcanic massif (Piton des Neiges, 3,069 m) around which crops are being developed, while the towns are almost all facing seawards.
POPULATION :
With over 760,000 inhabitants, Reunion is rich due to its intermarrying, its cultures, and its youth (50% of the population are under the age of 30) and continues to be mainly urban (Saint Denis, the capital, has 4 Arrondissements and 24 Boroughs).
CLIMATE :
Tropical and temperate due to its insularity and its relief.
ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES :
Réunion, which is mainly agricultural (vanilla, perfume plants, sugar cane) and devoted to tourism (450,000 stays), is seeking to diversify and develop itself in the industrial (agro-food, construction) and tertiary sectors in order to offer jobs to a population which often has to reconcile itself to seeking employment elsewhere.
EDUCATION/HEALTH :
A multi-disciplinary university sector, and approximately twenty hospitals and clinics.
TRANSPORT :
Two international airports (Roland Garros and Pierrefonds) offer approximately twenty direct daily flights to Europe (average flight time: 10 hours) and regional links with Mauritius, Mayotte and the Seychelles,
South Africa, Madagascar, Kenya and so forth, and receive over 1.5 million passengers. A port platform (Port-Réunion) enables maritime links with the Indian Ocean.
